Mary in Canada, You are correct, the song was first composed in 1973. Elton John contacted Bernie Taupin to rework the song as a tribute to Princess Diana in 1997. Elton John sang at the Princess's services at the request of her sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and the official title of the song is Candle in The Wind 1997.

The song Candle in the Wind was first published in the 1970s... Sir Elton modified the original in tribute to Diana. Also, Bernie Taupin is a "lyricist" not a "lyrist".

Tell me this if you can, why does Elton John not do more for Epilepsy? And if he has not done some big bashing thing within a year, I and my friends will start calling him a sissy!!! I already sent a VERY good letter to Rolling Stone about this. Plus, there are many different groups that go to D.C. every year, but nothing is done about awareness. Epilepsy is much serious than, Muscular Dystrophy, Muscular Sclerosis, Parkinsons, and Cystic Fibrosis! Can't someone get the word out about this? I mean it also intertwines with Autism, so how can it not be serious?!
