Rihanna is finally talking about getting beat up by her former boyfriend Chris Brown.  The headline-grabbing incident took place last February, and the singer has kept quiet ever since, but now she is ready to tell her side of the story.  Rihanna sat down with Diane Sawyer and did an interview with Glamour magazine.  In the article Rihanna says she thinks “domestic violence is a big secret,” and that she hopes she can be a voice for women who are too afraid to speak up, and serve as a “voice that isn’t really heard.”

I’m actually interested to hear what she has to say but at the same time, wonder why she didn’t speak up sooner? Maybe she was just waiting for the media circus to die down a bit? Plus, I’m sure she had some emotional healing, as well as physical healing, she needed to do before she could talk to the entire world about it.

Actually, I think it was because her new CD drops next week.  Not that she doesn’t have a valid message to share with the public, but the timing of the TV and magazine interviews are telling.  The latest now is that Chris Brown is trying to steal Rihanna’s thunder because his new album is hitting stores next week (the drop date got pushed up) and he just did an interview on MTV telling his side of the story.

I respect her for being seemingly brutally honest about such a personally traumatic event. And I also respect her for thinking about all the young girls who are her fans and realizing that her actions, or inaction, does have an impact. But, yeah, the timing is a bit questionable, but in the end, I think her album would have done well whether she talked about Chris Brown right before it dropped or not.

Did you watch the interview last week?  I thought she did as well as possible given the circumstances.  What I find shocking is that following the interview Chris Brown had the nerve to come out and state that he thought what went on between he and Rhianna should remain private—just between the two of them.  I say he gave up that right when he smacked her and made their confrontation a police matter.
