On July 15, 2011, the entertainment world was rocked by news that Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were getting a divorce. Although this marriage was long considered one of the most solid relationships in the entertainment industry, the stories that spilled out after the announcement left celeb watchers scratching their heads and wondering how the couple had managed to keep so many secrets.

Marriage Background

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony had been friends since the 1990s, after they worked on several music videos together and had even dated briefly. After that quick romance, things between them were strictly platonic. Things changed within two months of Lopez's highly publicized split from Ben Affleck - the end of the so-called "Bennifer" era.

After Lopez split from Affleck in January 2004, Anthony separated from his then wife, Miss Universe Dayanara Torres, and began to spend time with Lopez. The relationship heated up quickly. At the start of June, Torres and Anthony finalized their divorce. On June 5, Lopez and Anthony invited friends to Lopez's house for a party. When they arrived, they discovered they were in fact guests at a wedding. Anthony and Lopez got married that night, four days after his divorce from Torres was final.

Over the course of their marriage the couple worked on several movie and music projects together. In 2007, they announced that Lopez was pregnant. In February, 2008, she gave birth to twins, Emme Maribel Muniz and Maximillian David Muniz.

Jennifer Lopez Divorce Announcement

Everything changed in July 2011. Word of the split came via a statement issued by the couple's shared publicist. The couple claimed that the split was amicable and that they had reached settlements on all issues. They also asked for privacy as they worked through their divorce.

Soon after they made their announcement, however, rumors began to circulate that couple had actually been separated for months and had managed to hide the story from the press. Sources close the pair leaked stories about their troubles, but the most convincing evidence that the separation was old news came in the timing of a Vanity Fair cover story featuring Lopez. The interview, in which Lopez discusses her divorce, hit newsstands at the start of August, but the magazine closes their issues three weeks prior to publication. Given the July 15 announcement of the divorce, the dates just don't add up according to several sources, including MTV.

Allegations

Jennifer Lopez

After the divorce announcement, it didn't take long for the accusations and finger pointing to start. A barrage of rumors hit the press, some blaming Lopez for the split with others placing responsibility squarely on the shoulders of Anthony. Some of the charges include:

  • Anthony had rekindled the romance with his ex-wife.
  • Anthony was too controlling of Lopez and especially objected to the revealing outfits she often wore on stage and in promotional photo shoots.
  • Lopez had become involved with a dancer on the set of one of her music videos.
  • Anthony cheated on Lopez with an airline stewardess.
  • Lopez's decision to do American Idol prevented Anthony from accepting a role in a reality show, causing resentment.

Reunited?

A few weeks after their divorce announcement, Lopez and Anthony set the rumor mill chugging again when they were spotted sitting together in the back seat of a car in the Hamptons. Although speculation about reconciliation swirled, news emerged that the couple were together to spend time with their children.
