Sheen gained national attention with movie roles in Red Dawn, Platoon and Wall Street. His later ventures including Hot Shots and Major League demonstrated a cheeky sense of humor in the actor. In 2000, Charlie Sheen made the leap to primetime television as Charlie Crawford on the sitcom Spin City replacing Michael J. Fox. When the series ended in 2002, Sheen joined a new sitcom called Two and a Half Men as Charlie Harper. According to USA Today, by 2010 Sheen was the highest paid comedy actor on television earning nearly two million dollars per episode.

In January 2011, Sheen was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for severe stomach pains. Sheen later announced that he was undergoing drug rehabilitation and CBS officially placed the hit sitcom Two and a Half Men on hiatus. On February 24, Sheen appeared on a radio broadcast hosted by Alex Jones and made several derogatory remarks about series creator Chuck Lorre. CBS later canceled Two and A Half Men. Charges of antisemitism, unprofessionalism and more were rampant in the weeks that followed as Sheen and Lorre feuded in public.

On March 7, 2011, CBS and Warner Brothers officially fired the actor. In May of 2011, Ashton Kutcher was announced as his replacement.

Charlie Sheen has been married three times and has five children. His oldest daughter Cassandra was born to his high school girlfriend. In 1990, Charlie Sheen was engaged to Kelly Preston, whom he reportedly shot in the arm. The actress broke off the engagement not long after the incident. During his 2011 tour, Sheen reportedly debunked the urban myth of his shooting Kelly Preston. Through the 1990s, Sheen was seen dating a number of adult film actresses. E! Online published a detailed list of Charlie Sheen's rap sheet and news scandals, including the fact that he was named as one of the clients of the infamous escort agency run by Heidi Fleiss in 1995.

Sheen's 1995 marriage to Donna Peele was short lived, lasting just short of one year. In May of 1998, Sheen was hospitalized for a cocaine overdose. Later that year his probation for a previous drug conviction was extended.

He met Denise Richards in 2000 and the two were married in 2002. The pair have two daughters, Sam and Lola. In 2005 Richards filed for divorce citing threats of violence, alcohol abuse and drug abuse. While the divorce was quickly finalized, their custody battle played out in the press and the court room.

In 2008 Sheen married Brooke Mueller. Mueller soon gave birth to twin boys Bob and Max. On Christmas Day 2009, Sheen was arrested and charged with felony menacing, third-degree assault and criminal mischief when police were called to the home he shared with Mueller. Sheen plea-bargained down to a lesser charge and served 30 days in drug rehab, 30 days of probation and 36 hours of anger management.

In 2010 Sheen filed for divorce from Mueller. In October of that same year, Sheen was removed from his suite at the Plaza Hotel in New York after causing serious damage to the hotel room. Sheen reportedly told police he'd been drinking and was later taken to the hospital for observation and release.

In March of 2011, in response to the feud with Lorre, his subsequent firing from CBS and more, Sheen announced a nationwide tour called My Violent Torpedo of Truth, Defeat is Not An Option. The tour was met with mixed reviews, including the actor being booed off the stage in Detroit.
