Val Kilmer Jumping Into Politics
From LoveToKnow Celebrity
Is Val Kilmer jumping into politics in New Mexico? That's the word around the rumor mill.
The Iceman in New Mexico?
Actor Val Kilmer has got to have the cocky confidence of his long ago alter ego Iceman in Top Gun as he has been quoted as saying that "…I'm going to be the next governor" should he decide to enter the political arena. Wondering why New Mexico? Well, that's his home state of course and since current governor Bill Richardson is finishing up his second term in 2010, Kilmer is tossing around the idea of taking Richardson's vacant seat.
Why Actors Get Political
Well, the answer to that is… who knows. Voicing their opinions for a particular candidate or cause, people can understand, but what makes actors think they have the chops to work in politics? That question may never be answered, but Kilmer says that he wants to be "contributive". He wasn't quite clear as to what he was planning to contribute to though.
Actors and politics have romanced each other for a number of years, so Val Kilmer's maybe-run for governor is certainly no surprise. Here are some other celebs that have entered politics:
- Sonny Bono – California congressman.
- Clint Eastwood – Mayor of Carmel, California for one term.
- Fred Grandy – Remember Gopher from The Love Boat? Well, he was an Iowa congressman for four terms.
- Arnold Schwarzenegger – Governor of California.
- Ronald Reagan – President of the United States.
We'll all have to wait a year to see what happens in New Mexico's gubernatorial election…if we still care by then.
