Tila Tequila
From LoveToKnow Celebrity
Tila Tequila's rise to reality show stardom started off as a bit unconventional then other reality stars.
Tila Tequila's Childhood
| ||||||||||
Tila Tequila and her family left their native country of Singapore for Vietnam shortly after she was born. After the South East Asian country was ravished by the Vietnam War, the Nguyen family moved the United States, landing in Houston, Texas.
During her adolescent middle school years, Tila began getting herself in to trouble at school and her parents sent her to boarding school in an attempt to help straighten her out. Boarding school didn't work, as Tequila returned to Houston and continued to get into more trouble, but this time, it was more than just a few schoolyard fights.
While in high school, Tila began experimenting with drugs and even joined a gang. By the time she was 16, in an attempt to escape her troubles, she fled from her Houston home, landing in New York. The troubled teen eventually returned to Houston where, just a short time later, she would get her first big break into the entertainment industry.
Playboy Calling
While tooling around in a local Houston mall, a scout for Playboy magazine saw the then 18 year old Tila and approached her to do a test shoot. Tequila, looking for any way out of her hometown, agreed.
In 2002, Tequila became the magazine's first ever "Asian Cyber Girl of the Month." After Playboy, the newly minted model went on to pose for various magazines like:
- Import Tuner
- Stuff
- Maxim (UK)
- Penthouse
- Time
MySpace Madness
When Miss Tequila joined the social networking site MySpace after leaving Friendster, no one could possibly predict how popular she was to become. With her provocative photos garnering the attention of many and probably a legion of fans from her various nude spreads in Playboy and Penthouse, Tequila is now the reigning queen of MySpace with over two million "friends" to date. This cyber-success was later parlayed into her own reality show A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila on MTV.
Finding Love, MTV Style
The first installment of a Shot at Love featured Tila and 32 men and women. The show's twist was that supposedly, neither the men nor the women contestants on the show knew that Tequila was bisexual. At the show's end, Tila crowned Bobby Banhart as her prince. As everyone knows with these "finding love" reality shows, these made-for-TV relationships never workout (except for just a few) and Banhart lashed out at Tequila after the taping of the final show stating that she "…never called me after the last show and no one would give me her number." Tequila retorted with her own statement claiming it was the fact the two couldn't be seen together after the last taping and that drove them apart.
Giving Love Another Shot
Not learning from her mistakes (or anyone else's who try to find love on TV) the first time, a second installment of A Shot at Love began airing on MTV in April of 2008. This time, the contestants were well aware of her bisexuality. The winner of the second season was Kristy Morgan, a former Playboy model.
At the finale, upon learning that she had won the affections of Miss Tequila, Miss Morgan declined her advances stating she "…wasn't ready for a relationship with a woman." Ouch. Seems like not everyone wants to be Tila Tequila's friend.
More Tila to Come
Yep, just like Bret Michaels on VH1's Rock of Love and his seemingly perennial search for true love, you can bet that Tila Tequila will make another appearance on MTV in the next season of A Shot at Love 3. So, this 10-Minute celebrity surely isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
