Ruben Studdard to Open Nightclub

From LoveToKnow Celebrity

While Ruben Studdard won the second season of American Idol, he seemed to fade from the spotlight after his record sales were eclipsed by the season’s runner-up, Clay Aiken. Now he’s back with a new venture – a nightclub.

Studdard’s Rise to Fame

During Ruben Studdard’s time on American Idol, he became known as the “Velvet Teddy Bear” because of his cuddly demeanor and velvety singing voice. After he won the season, he later went on to record two albums (the second of which, a gospel album, went gold). Aiken, who placed second that same season, had much larger record sales and has a strong following of fans, known as "Claymates," which keep his career afloat.

Idol Nightclub Projects

Studdard will be opening a new club, tentatively called "Ruben’s Club 205" in Birmingham, Alabama -- the singer’s hometown. The 205 area code became a signature of Studdard in his wardrobe choices, as he was often seen during the season wearing jerseys sporting the number. The club will feature R&B and gospel music, his signature song styles.

Not to be outdone, American Idol season five winner, Taylor Hicks, is also eyeing a nightclub project in Birmingham. The future of his endeavor will be determined during upcoming meetings between his representatives and city officials.

2009 Opening?

No details are yet available about when either of these clubs will open in Birmingham’s new $50 million entertainment district, but developers hope to have the district open in summer 2009.
