Richard Hatch Wants Out of Prison
From LoveToKnow Celebrity
Richard Hatch is widely known as the first winner of the reality TV series Survivor, who won the grand prize of one million dollars.
On Survivor
Hatch was quite memorable in his appearance on Survivor, as he played the game with a cutthroat strategy and wasn't afraid to lie and back stab his opponents. He also had an affinity for nudity, and was dubbed "the fat naked guy" by late night talk show host David Letterman.
Tax Evasion
In 2005, Hatch was indicted for tax evasion after it came to light that he had never paid taxes on the money he received from the show, as well as income he earned in promoting the show through interviews and other media. The case became quite a scandal as details emerged.
Hatch went to jail in May of 2006, and is currently serving a 51-month sentence. His trial became tabloid media fodder, as he continually placed blame on CBS, the Survivor production staff and others for his failure to report his winnings as income. He was outspoken in his belief that he was being unjustly persecuted and made an example of.
Request for Early Release
With only a few more months left in his sentence, Hatch has written a 43-page plea and officially filed for early release. He claims that he was under-represented in his trial, and that the judge handed him an unfair sentence. He also believes that, since his persona on Survivor was that of a villain, he has been typecast as manipulative and evil and that this perception has affected his current situation.
This is not the first time Hatch has asked to be released from prison. With only a few months to go until his release in October 2009, it's surprising that he feels he should be released at this point in this sentence..

It does seem like a 51 month sentence is a little long for tax evasion. $600,000 in fines is a huge amount! We'll all just have to see how this pans out.

If the government agrees to an early release they are more or less agreeing with Rich that at "least in his mind" NES agreed to pay his taxes. In any event he does not have the $600,000 he owes in fines. So He got to get it somewhere.I assume he will call the radio station money an oversight. He might be able to pay taxes on it.
