On Thursday nights, women of all ages are glued to their television sets hoping to catch a glimpse of Patrick Dempsey, also known as Dr. Derek Shepherd or Dr. McDreamy. However, few know the inside scoop on this Grey’s Anatomy heartthrob.
Early Years
Although Patrick Dempsey has only recently become a household name, he’s been performing steadily for most of his life. At 15, he toured the New England Vaudeville Circuit as a juggler, unicyclist, magician, and comedian. At 16, he won a Talent America contest. At 18, he toured with the stage production of Torch Song Trilogy.

Grey’s Anatomy Success
Fans who can’t get enough of Dr. McDreamy will be shocked to learn that Patrick Dempsey originally went after the part of Dr. Robert Chase on House, another medical drama. Fortunately, he lost that part to Jesse Spencer.
First intended as a midseason replacement, nobody expected Grey’s Anatomy to become one of ABC’s hit shows. However, since its debut on March 27, 2005, the show has received a number of awards and won the hearts of viewers from across the globe.
Dempsey is definitely doing his part to enjoy the show’s success. “I'm really happy to go to work every day,” he has said in previous press interviews. “The show’s got humor, drama, and a little edge.”
While the women of Grey’s Anatomy are known for their close relationship, there have been several reports of friction between the male cast members. In October 2006, a fight erupted between Dempsey and Isaiah Washington after Dempsey arrived five minutes late for shooting. The fight ended with Isaiah making a homophobic remark about gay cast member T.R. Knight.
Personal Life
If you’ve been dreaming about Dr. McDreamy, you’ll be sorry to hear that Patrick Dempsey has been off the market for quite some time. On July 31, 1999, he married make-up artist and founder of Delux Beauty, Jillian Fink. They have one daughter, Tallulah Fyfe, and are expecting twin boys in 2007.
Previously, Dempsey was married to actress Rocky Parker from 1987 to 1994—a relationship that caused a fair amount of controversy because he was 21 and she was 48 at the time of their wedding. Because of the age difference in his first marriage, Patrick’s former stepson, Corey Parker, is actually one year older than him. The two still remain close friends, however.
