Paris Hilton Sentenced to 45 Days in Jail
From LoveToKnow Celebrity
First Naomi Campbell was sentenced to cleaning floors as punishment for breaking the law, and now it's Paris Hilton's turn. On May 4, 2007, the socialite, model and celebreality star was sentenced to 45 days in jail for repeatedly driving with a suspended license -- an act that violated the terms of her probation.
Her Crimes
Hilton, 26, received a three-year probation in January 2007 after she pleaded no contest to a DUI arrest from 2006. This time, prosecutors argued that Hilton failed to enroll in the court-ordered alcohol-education program and knowingly drove despite the suspension. Hilton, who testified that she thought her license was only suspended for 30 days, said, "I never would've been driving if my license was suspended. I follow the law. I'm followed by cameras every single day."
Her Punishment
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Sauer said at People.com, "[Hilton] disregarded everything ... and didn't care and kept driving." He added that she received a written warning by the California Highway Patrol on January 15, 2007 verifying that her license was indeed suspended. Paris Hilton is required to start serving her sentence by June 5, 2007.
The Apology
Paris Hilton said she was remorseful for her actions and stated in court before her sentencing, "I respect the law. ... I want you to know I'm very sorry and will pay complete attention to everything from now on."
Hilton is one of several celebrities who have received more than a slap on the hand for breaking the law. In March 2007, model Naomi Campbell served a five-day sentence of cleaning the floors in the New York City Sanitation Department for assaulting her housekeeper with a cell phone. In 2006, former Culture Club singer Boy George was ordered to clean up New York City streets and parks after police found drugs in his apartment.
