Early Years

Bloom was born Orlando Jonathan Blanchard Bloom on January 13, 1977, in Canterbury, England, to Sonia Constance Josephine Bloom. Bloom grew up believing that Harry Saul Bloom was his father, but after Harry Bloom’s death, Sonia Bloom revealed to her son that his father was actually family friend Colin Stone.

Bloom struggled in his early years of schooling, due to his dyslexia, but found his niche when he moved to London in 1993 to study acting at the National Youth Theatre. Through the theater, he was awarded a scholarship to the British American Drama Academy.

In 1997, he made his onscreen debut in the British hospital drama Casualty and later that year appeared on the big screen with Stephen Fry in Wilde, playing the character of Rentboy.

After filming Wilde, Bloom entered the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London to study acting and photography. His big break came in 1999 when he won the part in Lord of the Rings.

The first installment of the Lord of Rings series was hugely successful and made stars of all involved. The two sequels scored equally well in the box office and inspired a legion of obsessive fans. The movies won many awards, and Bloom won a Screen Actors’ Guild award in 2003 for Best Ensemble Cast.

Also in 2003, Bloom went from one successful franchise to another, by palying Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. That film was one of the highest grossing films of the year, and Bloom reprised his role of Will Turner in the sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. The second film hit theaters in summer of 2006 and broke box office records.

Bloom found time for more moviemaking outside of his Rings and Pirates roles. In 2005, he starred in Kingdom of Heaven and Elizabethtown. While neither film made the splash of his other movies, Bloom still received critical praise for his work. He also appeared in the straight to video Calcium Kid the same year.

Other films in which he has appeared include:

  • Black Hawk Down
  • Ned Kelly
  • Troy
