Oprah Named Forbes' Most Powerful Celebrity
From LoveToKnow Celebrity
Move over Tom Cruise, talk show diva Oprah Winfrey is now the world's most powerful celebrity, according to Forbes' annual "Celebrity 100 Power List," which was released in June 2007.
The Queen Reigns Again
Oprah, who topped the list in 2005, regained her number one position and is said to have earned a whopping $260 million over the last year. Besides her daytime show and her media empire, she is set to release two primetime reality shows this fall. She is known as the "nation's richest African-American," according to Forbes.com. In her attempt to help others, in January 2007, she opened the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.
Cruise, who was ranked at the top of the list in 2006, dropped down a few notches after spending a quiet year at home with his wife, Katie Holmes, and baby Suri.
The celebs who make up the top 10 are:
- Oprah Winfrey
- Tiger Woods
- Madonna
- Rolling Stones
- Brad Pitt
- Johnny Depp
- Elton John
- Tom Cruise
- Jay-Z
- Steven Speilberg
Who's New on the List?
In 2007, 29 newcomers were named to the "Celebrity 100 Power List," including:
- Ben Stiller
- The cast of Grey's Anatomy
- George Clooney
- Justin Timberlake
- Keira Knightley
- Bon Jovi
- Dane Cook
- Vince Vaughn
- Cate Blanchett
Who Didn't Make it?
Lack of blockbusters and increased negative publicity caused several powerful celebs to not be included in this year's list, including:
- Jim Carrey
- Halle Berry
- Cameron Diaz
- Renee Zellweger
- Paris Hilton
- Britney Spears
- Lindsay Lohan
Calculating the List
To create the list ranking, Forbes analyzes celebrity earnings, search engine optimization, mentions in the press and on television/radio and the number of times the star appeared on the cover of a major consumer magazine. The earnings are for a one-year period, from June 2006 to June 2007.
