Michael Richards’ Racial Outburst and Apology
From LoveToKnow Celebrity
Apparently not learning from the wrongdoings of Mel Gibson before him, Michael Richards (Kramer, of Seinfeld fame) made some not-so-pleasant comments during a recent comedy club appearance.
Where Did it Go Wrong?
Michael Richards’ comedy set at the Laugh Factory started innocently enough on Friday, November 17. At one point during his routine, a couple of guys started heckling him – causing Richards to lose his temper and spout off racist comments. The audience members responded with nervous laughter, unsure of whether or not the comments were part of the act.
The Repercussions
Of course, this type of angry racial outburst is not likely to go unnoticed. Footage of the appearance soon made its way on the Internet, and before long, people were comparing the incident to the Mel Gibson snafu. Jerry Seinfeld offered a statement to smooth the waters and identify that the offensive comments Richards made were “a horrible, horrible mistake.”
Nice Guy Image Shattered
Michael Richards had long been identified with the eccentric character Kramer that he played on Seinfeld. By all accounts and in interviews, he seemed to be a fun-loving and likeable guy. In light of the incident, it appears that not only does Richards have anger issues, but he also has racial issues. Comedians have long been heckled while performing on stage, and many have found humorous ways to turn it around on the hecklers.
Making It Right
Soon after the news spread, Michael Richards made a public apology (via satellite) during an appearance by Jerry Seinfeld on The Late Show With David Letterman. Seinfeld had been previously scheduled to appear on the late night talkfest. Time will tell if the incident will tarnish Richards’ reputation or if fans are willing to forgive and forget.
