Mel Gibson and Britney Spears left the United States for Costa Rica on a getaway of sobriety.

Mentoring Britney

Following the dustup after Britney's many troubles in the past year, Mel, who has had his own set of troubles in the past, expressed interest in mentoring Spears. It seems talk turned into action as Brit, dad Jamie, Mel and his wife Robin flew south via private jet to the Latin American country of Costa Rica. Gibson owns a reported $26 million ranch in Playa Barrigona in the Guancaste province.

Not the First Meeting

This Costa Rican trip is not the first time Gibson and Spears have hooked up. The Oscar winner and pop star were spotted dining together a few months ago at a Studio City restaurant to talk about living a sober life.

Mel's Experience

Though after Gibson's DUI arrest last year and the unfortunate remarks he made to the LAPD while drunk was not his best moment, the Oscar award winning star made his apologies and amends shortly after the incident and has been laying low ever since. The recovering alcoholic reportedly "fell off the wagon" a few months prior to the incident. He has stayed sober ever since.

Britney's Progress

Aside from her recent car accident, Britney seems to be working hard to clean up the mess that was once her life and stay sober. A California judge granted her more time with her children and the only pictures taken of Brit lately are of her leaving the Millennium Dance Studio. So, it seems that whatever she's doing, it's working.
