Gibson and his wife, Robyn, were together for 28 years, and there's a lot of money being bargained with in this case. Mel met Robyn Moore in 1979. Robyn was a dental nurse and Mel had just wrapped up filming on Mad Max. The couple were married in 1980 and have had seven children together. They are:

The Mel Gibson Divorce

Robyn Gibson filed for divorce on April 13, 2009. The couple had been separated for nearly three years by this time, but remained committed to their children. Both claimed that they had tried their hardest to make the relationship work, but rumors of Mel Gibson's infidelity continued to swirl.

If the Mel Gibson divorce papers weren't enough of a confirmation that the relationship was over, the news that his girlfriend, Russian model and singer Oksana Grigorieva, is pregnant and due to deliver in the fall of 2009 certainly sealed the deal.

Divided Assets

After 28 years of marriage, Robyn Gibson is entitled to half of Mel Gibson's assets. The couple never signed a pre-nup mainly because Gibson was an unknown actor when he was married. While there is, as yet, no solid figure to determine his monetary worth, estimates have placed him at about the one billion dollar mark.

Most of Gibson's money, however, is tied up in real estate. With market prices dropping quickly in 2009, his net worth may be quite a bit lower than originally anticipated.

Either way, the couple has agreed to make the split as amicable as possible, and there's no doubt that there's plenty of money for both of them.

Mel Gibson was born Mel Colm-Cille Gerard Gibson, on January 3, 1956, in Peekskill, New York. He has ten brothers and sisters. When he was 12 years old, his father moved the Gibson family to Sydney, Australia.

Mel's acting career began in 1976, but his first real starring role came along in 1979, when he played the title character in the movie Mad Max. This gritty and violent film became the catalyst that spawned not only several sequels, but launched Gibson's career in Hollywood.
