Mel Gibson's Wife Files for Divorce
From LoveToKnow Celebrity
Mel Gibson's wife filed for divorce after nearly 30 years of marriage.
Stating the Usual
No details were given in the filing of the divorce papers by Robyn Gibson, except for the old "irreconcilable differences" standby. One would think that after being together for 28 years and seven kids, a couple could learn to get along, but with all of Mel's troubling behavior awhile back, maybe Mrs. Gibson finally had enough.
Separation
It turns out that the news of the divorce filing isn't much of a surprise to those close to the couple - they have been separated since 2006 and have been living separate lives since then. The separation came just weeks after Mel's drunk driving arrest.
The Most Expensive Divorce?
Given Mel's estimated net worth of nearly $1 billion (yep, that's a b), many are saying that this divorce is set to be one of the most expensive Hollywood divorces ever. In the 1980's when the couple tied the knot, they did so sans pre-nuptial agreement. According to California state law and given the length of the marriage, this entitles the soon-to-be-former Mrs. Gibson half of Mel's net worth. Here's a quick breakdown of Mel's money:
- Over $500 million earned from The Passion of the Christ
- He owns an island in Fiji worth an estimated $15 million in 2004
- Has earned over $75 million from films he produced like:
- Braveheart
- Apacalypto
- The Man Without a Face
"Mutual Respect"
Sources say that the Gibsons will more than likely reach an out of court settlement due to the high level of "mutual respect" the two have for one another. Gibson once called his wife "a saint for putting up with him" over the years. Let's hope his attitude doesn't change when large sums of money are involved.
