With all the negative publicity surrounding young Hollywood these days, it's good to hear about a celebrity such as Mandy Moore. This graceful gal has grown from a sugary-sweet teenybopper into a superstar in her own right. She hasn't let the stardom go to her head -- or get her into trouble.
The Early Years
Amanda "Mandy" Leigh Moore was born April 10, 1984 in Nashua, New Hampshire, to Stacy and Don Moore. Her mother is a former newspaper reporter, while her father is a pilot for American Airlines. She has two brothers, Scott and Kyle. Moore's interest in music began after watching a performance of Oklahoma! While living in Florida, she became known as the "National Anthem Girl" after performing The Star-Spangled Banner at numerous area sporting events. After capturing the attention of a Sony 550 Music executive, she signed her first record deal. She was only 15.
Music Career
After Moore signed her first contract, she went on tour with the Backstreet Boys. Her first album, So Real, was released in December 1999 and reached number 31 on the Billboard 200.
Now dubbed a "Pop Princess," Moore's album was certified platinum and sold one million copies. Critics called her ballads "nauseating" and said they were performed with "suffocating professionalism." A year later, she released a rework of her debut album, called I Wanna Be with You, which reviewers still criticized, claiming it was a not a true follow-up album. The title track, also titled I Wanna Be with You, reached number 24 on the Hot 100.
Moore seemed to find her niche when her third album, Mandy Moore, was released in June 2001. Promotions for this album included her first headlining concert, "Mandy Moore Live@ShoutBack." Her other releases include:
- Coverage (2003)
- The Best of Mandy Moore (2004)
- Candy (2005)
- Wild Hope (2007)
Acting Career
After launching her music career, it didn't take Moore long to get her feet wet on the silver screen. After a smaller role in Disney's The Princess Diaries in 2001, she got her first starring role a year later in a remake of the Nicholas Sparks' bestseller, A Walk to Remember. Other film roles include:
- Try Seventeen (2002)
- How to Deal (2003)
- Chasing Liberty (2004)

In 2004, Mandy Moore joined he ranks of fellow celebrities Jennifer Lopez and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen by becoming a fashion designer. Her label and line of t-shirts, called Mblem, is geared toward young ladies who are taller like Moore, who is five-feet, 10-inches tall. Although she doesn't design the tops herself, she does get to choose what she likes and doesn't like from clothing created by professional designers. Her clothing line includes t-shirts with the lyrics to some of her favorite classic rock songs printed on them.
