The Search for Answers
It is always tragic when someone so young dies unexpectedly. Heath Ledger was loved by many and his death sent not only his close friends and family, but Hollywood, into mourning. The first autopsy performed could not pinpoint, nor indicate a cause of death for the young and talented actor. As a result, further tests were conducted to find out how Heath Ledger died.
A Heavy Work Schedule
Heath Ledger had earlier stated to reporters that during and after filming The Dark Knight, the next Batman installment and I'm Not There, a film about the legendary musician Bob Dylan, his heavy work schedule was beginning to adversely affect his health. Ledger stated that he was extremely exhausted, but getting little, if any sleep at night. He also stated in order to help his mind and body get some rest, he would take two sleep aids, only to find little relief in getting a couple of hours of sleep a night.
Accidental Overdose
It was widely reported that various prescription drugs were found in Ledger's apartment at the time of his death that included pain killers, anti-anxiety medication and sleep aids. Autopsy reports state that the combination of all these prescription medications is what led to the actor's death. Authorities are not releasing the concentration amounts of each medication, nor are they stating any drug in particular as the major cause of death.
The Ledger Family Speaks Out
Ledger's father, Kim, released a statement to the public regarding the tragic death of his son, saying: "While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage."
