Long before her personal life began making headlines, Katie Holmes won hearts with her girl-next-door beauty and her wide-eyed innocence.
Early Years
Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Holmes enjoyed a wholesome, all-American childhood complete with white picket fence. The child of devout Catholics, she was educated in Catholic private schools. Katie Holmes was a good student, impressing teachers with her intelligence, honesty, and wholesomeness.
Bit early by the acting bug, she participated in many school plays and musicals and began taking modeling classes at the age of 14.
Career and Accomplishments
Katie Holmes enjoyed success early in her career. After her agent sent a tape to casting directors, she was given a role in The Ice Storm. Though the role was small, it was enough to win her critical acclaim. From there, she was given the chance to audition for Dawson's Creek. Although she turned down a chance to audition in person because she was performing in a high school play on the same day, producers allowed her to try-out by video. The producers loved her interpretation of Joey Potter, and a star was born.
In her role as Joey Potter, Holmes was at times a tough tomboy and at others a vulnerable child. With her soulful brown eyes and earnest expressions, Katie Holmes won legions of teenage fans. Critics took note as well.
Although many critics hailed Holmes as the "Audrey Hepburn of her generation" and a future star, her film career has seen mixed reviews. She has had roles in:
- Disturbing Behavior
- The Gift
- Abandon
- Pieces of April
- First Daughter
- Thank You for Smoking
- Batman Begins
Katie Holmes' Personal Life
Unlike many in young Hollywood, Katie Holmes managed to keep her personal life private. She has described her Dawson's Creek costar, Joshua Jackson, as her first love. Holmes started dating actor Chris Klein in 2000, and the two were engaged in 2003. The two remained under-the-radar, with Holmes making headlines only for her wholesomeness and vow to remain a virgin until marriage. They grew apart and broke up in 2005.
In a drastic turn from her usual private nature, Holmes began a very public relationship with Tom Cruise in 2005, mere weeks after her break-up. The pair weathered criticism for their age difference (16 years) and religious difference. When they became engaged just two months after meeting, many alleged it was a publicity stunt. Critics also felt that Katie Holmes had turned away from her traditional values after meeting Cruise. This intensified after the engaged Holmes announced her pregnancy. There was also considerable publicity regarding the lifelong Christian's reported interest in Scientology.
Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise welcomed daughter Suri on April 18, 2006. Despite ongoing rumors of relationship trouble and break-ups, the duo was married November 18, 2006 in a decadent ceremony in an Italian castle.
