Early Years

Born in Memphis, Tennessee to parents Randall Timberlake and Lynn Bomar, Justin Timberlake grew up in a small town north of Memphis. It wasn’t long before he was making his mark as a singer, landing a spot on The Mickey Mouse Club. He wasn’t the only future music celebrity in the group of kids – with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and JC Chasez all part of the talented cast.

The Boy Band Craze

With boy band mania just starting to build in the 1990s, Timberlake and friend Chris Kirkpatrick started their group *N Sync with JC Chasez (from Mouse Club), Joey Fatone and Lance Bass. *N Sync was a force to be reckoned with from 1995-2002. Their 2000 album, No Strings Attached, broke records as the fastest selling album of all time. By 2002, following their Celebrity Tour, the group disbanded and Justin Timberlake embarked on a solo career.

Personal Life

Timberlake’s relationship with former Mouseketeer Britney Spears was well publicized. Since both had started their careers with clean-cut images, there was much speculation about Spears’ virginity and their sex life in general. His work on a solo album was an excellent opportunity to show that he was more than his boy band persona, and in March 2002, he and Spears broke up. The split proved to be inspiration for some of the songs on his album Justified, with the hit Cry Me a River featuring a Brit look-alike in the video.

Timberlake’s Solo Career

Justin Timberlake’s first solo album was an instant success, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 album chart and selling 493,000 copies during the first week’s release. In total, the album sold over 7 million copies worldwide. Hits included Like I Love You, Cry Me a River, and Rock Your Body.

Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz

Timberlake began dating Cameron Diaz in June 2003, with their nine year age difference often a topic of discussion on the media circuit. In 2006, tabloids speculated that the two had split, but they quashed all rumors of a break-up. The Los Angeles Times recently reported that the couple purchased a 16.9 million dollar beachfront estate in Hawaii; the purchase has yet to be confirmed.

The Infamous Wardrobe Malfunction

Timberlake and Janet Jackson performed during the halftime show of the Super Bowl in February 2004. More than 140 million viewers witnessed Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” when, at the end of their song, he removed part of Jackson’s costume to expose one of her breasts. While both singers and their representation maintained that it was a malfunction, many speculated that the occurrence of the reveal with the lyrics “gonna have you naked by the end of this song” was no coincidence. The two were not allowed to appear on the 2004 Grammy Awards unless they apologized. Jackson declined, but Timberlake issued his apology when he accepted the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album (he also won for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and was nominated for Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration).

Justin, the Actor

Justin Timberlake tried his hand at acting in 1999 in the TV movie Model Behaviour and the 2001 film On the Line. Once he had one solo album under his belt, he returned to acting with 2004s Edison Force (released direct-to-video in 2006) and is scheduled to appear in a number of upcoming films: Alpha Dog, Black Snake Moon, and Southland Tales, as well as lending his voice to Shrek the Third.

Timberlakes’ Newest Album

With a strong start to his solo career, Justin Timberlake released his sophomore album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, in September 2006. It debuted at number one on the Billboard chart and sold 684,000 copies during the first week. The album’s hit singles include SexyBack and My Love.
