Julia Fiona Roberts was born on October 28, 1967 in Smyrna, Georgia. Her father was a vacuum salesman and her mother was a church secretary and real estate agent. Both of her parents, as well as other extended family members, had been stage actors and her parents had also enjoyed writing plays.

Roberts' brother Eric and sister Lisa Roberts Gillan are both actors as well. After she graduated from high school, Julia joined Lisa in New York City to start her acting career. Julia was soon signed on with a modeling agency, as well as an acting school.

Roberts' first engagement was to actor Dylan McDermott, who co-starred with her in Steel Magnolias. Then, after meeting Kiefer Sutherland while filming Flatliners, the engagement was cut off. Roberts was then engaged to Sutherland and the wedding was planned, but she broke it off only three days before the wedding was to take place.

In 1993, Roberts married country musician Lyle Lovett. This marriage lasted two years before dissolving in 1995. One other notable relationship, with actor Benjamin Bratt, lasted three years before ending amicably.
