Jessica Biel

Some may be surprised to learn that singing, not acting was the first career choice for Jessica Biel
Jessica Biel Bio
| ||||||||||
Born in the heart of the Midwest in Ely, Minnesota, the young Miss Biel and her parents and younger brother moved often, landing in Texas, Illinois and Connecticut before permanently relocating to Boulder, Colorado. No matter how often she moved when she was young, Biel considers Boulder her childhood home.
Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains and acres of forests and foothills, it's no surprise that Jessica is athletically inclined and enjoys spending time outdoors. There's also the fact that while she was a child, her father was a Program Director for the Outward Bound School. The school is a non-profit "wilderness" school that takes groups of children out into the wilderness and teaches them things like self-reliance, teamwork and leadership via challenging outdoor adventures.
As a result of growing up in such an active household and probably due in part to her natural athleticism, some of the activities Biel has said she enjoys are:
- Yoga
- Soccer
- Snowboarding
- Running
- Mountain biking
Early Career
Even though Jessica considers Boulder her childhood home, this isn't where she first began acting. Back when Jessica Biel was eight years old and living in Connecticut, the movie Annie came out. If you're old enough to remember the Annie craze, Jessica was just like every other eight year old girl and longed to be the red-headed orphan adopted by "Daddy Warbucks." Unlike most eight year olds though, Biel auditioned for the play at the local theater. Though Jessica got a call back to the final auditions, she didn't win the part and was instead cast as the understudy. Biel never took the stage as Annie, stating that the star "never missed a show." When her family moved to Boulder, Biel gave Annie another try and this time, won the lead role.
Moving on to Hollywood
Having a love for singing and the stage, Biel states that Hollywood was really never in her plans. After her stints on stage in Annie, The Sound of Music and Beauty and the Beast, her talent agency encouraged the now 11 year old to attend a convention held in Los Angeles by the International Modeling and Talent Association. The convention was a competition amongst like-minded children wanting to break into the entertainment industry. Biel did well, earning a scholarship to the prestigious Young Actor's Space school. Jessica's family relocated to Los Angeles so the budding actress could concentrate on her acting career…after her schoolwork, of course. Biel's parents only allowed their young daughter to do auditions after school hours were over.
Becoming Mary Camden
After spending three years in Los Angeles auditioning for numerous roles in film and television, Jessica Biel landed the role that would bring her the stardom for which she was aiming. Biel was cast as Mary Camden on the show Seventh Heaven, which ended up being the longest running and the highest rated show on the WB network. The small screen role wasn't the only job Jessica Biel landed that week, she was also set to make her big screen debut in the film Ulee's Gold. Biel won the Young Artist Award for her work in the film.
