Early Roles
Jason Bateman first appeared at age 10 in an educational film – he won the role when he accompanied his friend on an audition.
After appearing in a number of TV commercials, Bateman landed his first television role in 1981, at the age of 12, on the television series Little House on the Prairie. He played James Cooper Ingalls, an orphan who was adopted by the Ingalls family.
By his teenage years, Bateman became more of a household name, appearing on the series Silver Spoons as Derek Taylor, opposite Ricky Schroeder, who played rich kid Ricky Stratton. After three seasons on Silver Spoons, Bateman starred in the 1984 series It’s Your Move, playing 14-year-old con artist Matt Burton. He also appeared on a 1984 episode of Knight Rider.
Bateman also starred on The Hogan Family (originally titled Valerie), playing the eldest of the Hogan kids, David. He also directed three episodes of the series at age 18. The Hogan Family was on the air for five years.

While Bateman’s star faded some following The Hogan Family, he still managed to land starring roles on television series: Simon (1995), Chicago Sons (1996), George & Leo (1997, opposite Bob Newhart) and Some of My Best Friends (2001). None of the series, however, had more than a one season run.
