Her parents are both involved in television production, as her father is a stage manager and television producer, while her mother is a script manager. Kristen an older brother named Cameron, and two adopted brothers called Taylor and Dana.

Stewart was cast in her first role in the television production of Disney's The Thirteenth Year. She was eight years old at the time. This small role led to much bigger parts, as well as critical acclaim for her acting skills.

• The Messengers – The Messengers was a thriller in which Stewart played the leading role. She worked alongside Dylan McDermott and Penelope Ann Miller.

• Into the Wild – Stewart was featured in Sean Penn's movie Into the Wild, playing a young singer who develops a crush on one of the lead characters.

• Cutlass – Cutlass was a short film that earned praise from movie critics. Stewart starred along with Dakota Fanning and Virginia Madsen.

• What Just Happened – Kristen Stewart plays a supporting role in this star-studded film that also includes Robert DeNiro, Bruce Willis, Sean Penn and Stanley Tucci.

The Twilight series of movies, based on the vampire novels by Stephanie Meyer, have catapulted Kristen Stewart onto the world stage. Since the books have become so beloved to teens and tweens, the movies were almost guaranteed to be huge hits.

The first movie, called simply Twilight, was released in 2008. The sequel, Twilight: New Moon, hits theatres in 2009, and will be followed by the third installment in 2010, titled The Twilight Saga: Eclipsed.
