Hilary Duff

Early Years

Born Hilary Erhard Duff on September 28, 1987 in Houston, Texas, Hilary knew at a young age that she wanted to be an actress. Her mother enrolled both Hilary and her sister, Haylie, in acting and ballet classes. By six, she participated in The Nutcracker with Columbus Ballet Met in San Antonio.

With Hilary’s interest in acting, her mother Susan moved the girls to California to pursue their careers. The Duff sisters were cast in television commercials before Hilary earned her first small role in the television mini-series True Women in 1997.

Hilary Duff’s first starring role was in the 1998 direct-to-video family film Casper Meets Wendy, playing a young witch. She also appeared in the 1999 television movie The Soul Collector, earning her a Best Performance Young Artist Award.

In 2001, Duff was cast as the title character in the Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire. The show was a big hit on the kid’s network, with 2.3 million viewers per episode. The popularity of the show justified the 2003 film, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, which was very successful. Her next role was in the Disney Channel movie Cadet Kelly.

Film Career

Hilary Duff’s popularity as Lizzie McGuire propelled her film career to new heights. She appeared in the following films:

  • Human Nature (2001)
  • Cheaper by the Dozen (2003)
  • Agent Cody Banks (2003)
  • A Cinderella Story (2004)
  • Raise Your Voice (2004)
  • Cheaper by the Dozen 2 (2005)
  • The Perfect Man (2005)

The Duff sisters appeared together in the 2006 film, Material Girls. Hilary Duff will next voice a character in the animated film Foodfight! and will appear opposite John Cusack in Brand Hauser.

Music Career

Not content with just a television and film career, Hilary Duff branched out into a singing career, recording tracks for Lizzie McGuire and the Disneymania compilation album. Her first album was a Christmas collection, with singles from the album also appearing on the soundtracks for The Santa Clause 2 and Cheaper by the Dozen. She also sang on the soundtrack for The Lizzie McGuire Movie.

Hilary Duff’s second album, Metamorphosis (2003), introduced hits like “So Yesterday” and “Come Clean,” both of which landed squarely on the top 40. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, bumped up to number one, and ultimately sold over three million copies. Additionally, all shows for her first tour were sold out.

In 2004, she sang on the second Disneymania album, as well as for the A Cinderella Story soundtrack. Her self-titled album was also released in 2004, debuting at number two.

With Joel Madden of Good Charlotte

2005 marked her fourth album, Most Wanted, a “best of” compilation of favorites from her previous albums, remixes, and new songs. The single, “Wake Up,” was a huge hit, as well as “Beat of My Heart.” The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and sold over one million copies.

Her fifth album will be released in spring 2007. The music video for the single “With Love” has been seen in the commercial for her fragrance of the same name. The single will play on radio stations beginning in February 2007.

Fashion Career

With an established name among the tween set, it seemed only natural that Duff would transfer her success into her own clothing line. The line, named “Stuff by Hilary Duff,” sold at Target stores and was wildly popular. The line made $5 million in the first year of sales.

Relationships

Hilary Duff’s first relationship was with singer Aaron Carter in 2002, after meeting on the set of Lizzie McGuire. It was rumored that Carter left Lindsay Lohan to pursue Duff and that the two actresses were feuding as a result.

In 2004, she started dating Joel Madden, lead singer for the band Good Charlotte. The two split in 2006, but continued to make headlines after their break up when a stalker that had threatened the two was sentenced to jail time.
