Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman, his colleague Tim Chapman (no relation) and his son Leland were takien into custody by Federal Marshals this morning in Hawaii. Though his publicist provided few details, she did say he would be vindicated.
Early Morning Raid
In an interview with MSNBC, Chapman’s wife, Beth, said heavily armed marshals busted into the house and arrested Chapman, just as she was getting their young children ready for school. According to another article 15 officers were involved and the trio went peacefully and without incident.
Statement Issued
The US Marshals released this statement: "The arrest warrant was signed by a U.S. magistrate in Hawaii on Sept. 13. The warrant was based on a formal request based on a diplomatic note from the government of Mexico."
Andrew Luster Case
Chapman and his crew are allegedly being extradited to Mexico on kidnapping charges, where bounty hunting is illegal. Apparently, the Andrew Luster case, which bought Chapman his much enjoyed fame, is coming back to haunt him. In a case of “Do as I say and not what I do,” the Chapmans fled Mexico after posting bail when they were originally arrested for the kidnapping. They were to return for their hearing on July 15, 2003 but never showed.
Above the Law?
There are those who feel that since Dog and company apprehended Luster, their illegal activities should be overlooked. While there is no arguing a dangerous criminal has been brought to justice, the fact remains that Dog and his cohorts broke the law in another country. Not only did they break the law, since they never returned to Mexico to stand trial, they obviously felt they were above the law as well. Why are so many outraged over Dog's arrest? Many feel he's a hero and should be freed. Whether or not he's a hero is a matter of debate but it raises some good questions. Would Chapman would have allowed one of his "busts" the same courtesy if there was extenuating circumstances surrounding that person's arrest? Dog, of all people, should know, if you do the crime, you do the time.
