Dog the Bounty Hunter
From LoveToKnow Celebrity
If you've had access to television in the last year, you've undoubtedly heard of Dog the Bounty Hunter. Both the man and the reality show have captured the attention of the nation.
Duane Chapman's Early Years
Before he became Dog the Bounty Hunter, he was Duane Lee Chapman. Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Chapman is no stranger to trouble. In fact, he was arrested a mind-boggling 18 times for armed robbery. Chapman's hard-living style finally caught up with him in 1977, when he was found guilty of murder and forced to serve time in a Texas prison. To this day, Chapman maintains his innocence.
Dog the Bounty Hunter Is Born
After his stint in prison came to an end, he decided to work on the other side of the law and became a bounty hunter. A maverick to the core, Chapman does whatever it takes to get the bad guy. Although others in the industry frequently question his renegade style, Chapman has been successful in bringing over 6,000 fugitives to justice.
When cable network A&E aired a special on bail bondsmen, they featured Duane "Dog" Chapman. Fans fell in love with the rough-around-the-edges Dog, with his cowboy style and rugged looks. Soon, he was offered his own reality television show.
About the Show
The show, Dog the Bounty Hunter, airs on A&E. Cameras follow Dog and his Da Kine Bail Bonds crew, including his wife, as they chase fugitives. Chapman is based in Honolulu, Hawaii, but the chases take him all over the country. In each action-packed episode, viewers see the seedy underside of crime, as Dog gives chase through questionable motels, dark alleys, and drug-infested neighborhoods.
The show also emphasizes Dog's keen intelligence, as he turns on the charm and gets his informants to talk. The show expertly shows Chapman's softer side, too. A firm believer in redemption and second chances, he frequently appeals to his captives' sense of right and wrong.
His Arrest
Even after his return to the right side of the law, Dog's life has not been without controversy. Critics have long alleged that he walked a fine line between chasing justice and breaking the law. One such law-blurring capture took place in 2003, when Dog and his associates crossed the border into Mexico in pursuit of a fugitive. In the end, Dog got the bad guy, convicted rapist Andrew Luster, but Mexican authorities were not impressed. The problem? Bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico, and the capture was considered a kidnapping.
All of that came to a head on September 14, 2006, when U.S. Marshalls arrested Dog, his son, and his business associate. The three were released on bail. On October 20, the Mexican federal court issued a delay in the case, pending further investigation.
