Director John Hughes Dies

Iconic screenwriter, producer and director John Hughes has died at the age of 59.
The Director of a Generation
Even if you aren't a part of the so-called "Generation X," it's more than likely that you know of John Hughes or at least of his films. Films like Ferris Beuller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club are just a few of the most often quoted movies in the industry. Here's a quick rundown of some other well-know Hughes films:
- Sixteen Candles
- Uncle Buck
- Pretty in Pink
- Some Kind of Wonderful
- Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Hughes is credited for launching the careers of actors such as Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy and Matthew Broderick. Not only did John Hughes play a heavy role in launching the careers of actors, but his use of music in his films also catapulted the careers of bands like Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (OMD) and Simple Minds.
Hughes used If You Leave by OMD for Pretty in Pink and Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds for Breakfast Club. Both bands became chart toppers after the release of these films.
Unexpected Death
Hughes was reportedly going out for a walk when he suffered a sudden heart attack. He was visiting Manhattan at the time of his sudden and unexpected death. Many filmmakers, including Judd Apatow and Kevin Smith, as well as actors like Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller name Hughes as huge influences in their careers.
