Diddy Gets Political
From LoveToKnow Celebrity
Diddy gets political once again, in this election year.
Citizen Change
Remember that campaign a few years back with the slogan "Vote or Die?" Well, Diddy is at it again, encouraging young people to stand up and be counted by casting their vote in this November's Presidential Election. Great message…but does it matter? The answer to that question is a little complicated.
Young Voter Turnout
Diddy isn't the only celebrity to encourage the younger generations to get out and vote for the next person that will run this country. Other celebs include Ben Affleck, Jack Black, Russell Simmons and Oprah Winfrey, among others, but there really is no telling whether or not encouragement from celebrities actually gets young adults out and voting. Here are some results from past elections:
- 2000 Presidential Election – 8 million 18-29 year olds voted.
- 2004 Presidential Election – 10 million people from the same age group voted.
The reason why it's so complicated is because it's possible that a couple of things are attributed to the higher number of 18-29 year olds voting. One of those things is that the population of that age group is increasing. Irregardless of the reasons behind the increase in young voter turnout, the higher numbers are a good thing.
The Diddy Bump?
Political pundits talk a lot about "bumps." What they are referring to is whether the votes for a particular candidate will increase due to a celebrity endorsement. This is a contentious election year, especially on the Democratic side. Even though Diddy isn't endorsing a particular candidate, it will be interesting to see whether or not any of them will benefit from a Diddy "bump."
