Demi Lovato is an actor and singer-songwriter who has found roles to showcase both of these talents. With her fresh good looks and lovely voice, she has won fans all over the globe.

Born Demetria Devonne Lovato on August 20, 1992 in Dallas, Texas. Her mother, Diana, was a country singer and Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. Demi has two siblings: an older sister named Dallas, and a younger half-brother called Madison.

Lovato's first major acting role was on the children's television program Barney and Friends in 2004, where she played Angela. She was with the show for two full seasons, and was a favorite amongst the kids who watched. The role required her to both act and sing, which would lead to similar, albeit larger, roles for her in the future. Being only six years old herself, it was easy for her to relate to her audience.

After Barney, Lovato moved on to a guest role in the drama Prison Break, where she played Danielle Curtin. She also had a brief role in the series Just Jordan on the Nickelodeon network.

Moving to Disney

In 2007, Lovato was cast in the Disney television series As the Bell Rings. The show, which was a spoof on soap operas but set in a school, is unique in that it lasts only five minutes per episode, and is made up of a series of comedy skits. As the Bell Rings is still airing on the Disney Channel, but Lovato's participation was limited to only the first season.

In addition to her portrayal of Charlotte Adams, the female lead, Lovato also contributed songs to the soundtrack for the show.

Camp Rock

Demi Lovato

The Demi Lovato biography really takes off with the Disney movie Camp Rock. The film was released in 2008 and starred Lovato as well as The Jonas Brothers. The plot of the movie centers around Lovato's character, Mitchie Torres, a 14 year old girl who dreams of becoming a singer. She wants to attend an elite summer camp for up and coming rock stars, but can only get there by taking a job in the kitchen. She is "discovered" by one of the rock stars who is working at the camp.

With a cast list that includes Lovato and The Jonas Brothers, the film was an almost instant success, especially with the tweens. A succession of branded items, from video games to dolls to lunchboxes have been released, including many items based on Lovato and her character.

Lovato has contributed three songs to the Camp Rock soundtrack, including:

  • Who Will I Be
  • This is Me
  • Our Time is Here

She also recorded an acoustic version of This is Me in Spanish for the release of the soundtrack in Spain.

Sonny With a Chance

Lovato is currently the star of the Disney series Sonny With a Chance, which premiered in February 2009. Her character, Sonny Monroe, has won a talent competition and made the move from Wisconsin to Hollywood to star in a sketch comedy television show.

Once again, Lovato provides music for the series, including the theme song.

In addition to her soundtrack work, Lovato released her first full-length album, called Don't Forget, in September 2008. Some of the songs were co-written with The Jonas Brothers, and Lovato was the opening act for the Jonas' 2008 tour.

Her second album, Here We Go Again, is scheduled for release in July 2009.

Upcoming Projects

Lovato is a rising star in Hollywood and on the charts. She has several films and projects in the works, including:

  • Princess Protection Program – another Disney movie, in which she stars with Selena Gomez.
  • Camp Rock 2
  • A summer music tour with special guest, American Idol contender David Archuleta.

Demi Lovato has found herself among the ranks of squeaky-clean tween favorites, a group that also includes Miley Cyrus, Zac Efron, and Vanessa Anne Hudgens.
