From Harry Potter, to a more grown-up role on stage, Daniel Radcliffe has proven that he’s a talented actor whose star is on the rise.
Early Years
Daniel Jacob Radcliffe was born July 23, 1989 in Fulham, London, England. His father, Alan Radcliffe, is a literary agent, and his mother, Marcia Gresham, is a casting agent. Radcliffe first knew he wanted to act when he was just five years old, but didn’t make his acting debut until 1999. He played a young Copperfield in a BBC television version of David Copperfield.
His Big Break
Daniel Radcliffe auditioned several times for the role of Harry Potter, and won the part in August 2000. The film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was an adaptation of the first book in J.K. Rowling’s series about a young wizard.
In 2001, Radcliffe appeared for the first time on film with Pierce Brosnan in The Tailor of Panama. Later that same year, the first Harry Potter film was released.
The Harry Potter Franchise
With the success of the first Harry Potter film and the popularity of the books, Daniel Radcliffe was guaranteed a prosperous future in the film sequels. As the title character, Radcliffe starred in four of the book's films, each garnering stellar box office numbers:

- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be released July 13, 2007. Radcliffe will also appear in the sixth and seventh installments of the film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Daniel Radcliffe Grows Up
Throughout the Harry Potter films, Daniel Radcliffe has grown and matured from a boy into a young man. He has not suffered the ill-fate of many child actors and has been fortunate to have opportunities to prove he can do mature roles.
- In 2002, he made an appearance in The Play What I Wrote, a London West End theater production directed by actor Kenneth Branagh.
- He appeared on the television show Extras in 2006, in a parody of himself, comically attempting to prove that he is an experienced young man.
- He stars in the indie Australian film, December Boys, scheduled to be released in 2007.
- In February 2007, Daniel Radcliffe starred in the play Equus, playing stable boy Alan Strang. Radcliffe made a bold move with the play, appearing nude in one scene. The role proved to be a huge departure from his boyish portrayal of Harry Potter, and he received favorable reviews for his performance.
- He will begin filming in July 2007 for a television movie, My Boy Jack, the story of Rudyard Kipling’s son, Jack Kipling, whom Radcliffe will portray.
Philanthropy
With a high net worth, Daniel Radcliffe is able to spread his wealth to those in need. He supports medical research for autism and terminally ill children, most notably the charity Demelza House Children’s Hospice. His fund-raising efforts include donating a lock of hair and autograph for Britain’s Comic Relief in 2003. He autographed a Hogwarts crew t-shirt and sold the item as part of the Tsunami Celebrity Clothes Auction in 2005. The shirt grabbed $995 to support the Rebuilding Sri Lanka Organization.
