Our Fascination with Celebrity Weddings
There’s no doubt that we’re all fascinated with celebrity weddings. For some of us, seeing our favorite actors, actresses, and musicians fall in love simply appeals to our romantic side. Of course, others enjoy seeing what type of wedding can be planned when you have unlimited resources.
Whatever your reason for loving celebrity weddings, read on for more information about how your favorite stars decided to tie the knot.
The Rings
One of the first things the public sees in celebrity weddings is the bride-to-be’s engagement ring. So, it’s only natural that celebrities tend to choose large and lavish rings with unusual details. For example:
- American Beauty actress Mena Suvari selected a ring featuring amethysts and citrines set in an asymmetrical design around a gold band for her marriage to cinematographer Robert Brinkmann.
- When Madonna married Guy Ritchie, she received a three-stone diamond engagement ring. Although the ring is traditionally designed to represent a couple’s past, present, and future, this one-of-a-kind Edwardian ring with diamond details throughout the platinum band is said to represent mother, father, and son.
- Catherine Zeta-Jones received a 10-carat antique diamond engagement ring from Michael Douglas. Her wedding ring includes a Celtic motif to symbolize her Welsh heritage.
Of course, even the inscription on your wedding ring provides an opportunity to make a statement when you’re a celebrity. Rumor has it that celebrity sweethearts Courtney Cox and David Arquette have the phrase "A deal's a deal" engraved inside their wedding rings.
The Ceremony
One hallmark of celebrity weddings is an exotic location for the ceremony. For example:
- In June 2006, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban married at Cardinal Ceretti Memorial Chapel in Sydney, Australia.
- In November 2006, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes tired the knot in a candlelit ceremony at Castello Odescalchi in Bracciano, Italy.
- In November 2006, Kimberly Roads of the band Little Big Town married Stephen Schlapman in a small, low-key ceremony on a private Caribbean island.
When you’re a celebrity, departing from tradition is another great way to make a statement. Consider these recent celebrity weddings:
- In June 2006, Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross married stockbroker Tom Mahoney at the Church of Our Savior Episcopal Parish in San Gabriel, California. Instead of bridesmaids, she selected seven flower girls—the children of her close friends.
- Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock had so much fun getting married in July 2006 that they planned multiple ceremonies in different locations. After an initial wedding in the South of France, they tied the knot again in California, Tennessee, and Michigan.
The Honeymoon
Planning a memorable wedding can be a stressful experience, even if you’re not famous! So, it’s no surprise that celebrities often choose to celebrate their new lives together with a private romantic getaway in an exotic location. Consider these recent celebrity honeymoons:
- Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott honeymooned in Fiji for nine days after their May 2006 wedding.
- After Avril Lavigne and Deryck Whibley tied the knot in June 2006, they chose Portofino, Italy as their honeymoon destination.
Happily Ever After?
Despite the fact that they’re blessed with fame and money, celebrities don’t always live happily ever after. In fact, celebrity weddings tend to end in divorce at an astonishingly quick rate. For example:
- Jennifer Lopez and Cris Judd were married in October 2001 and split in July 2002, after just eight months of marriage.
- Lisa Marie Presley and Nicolas Cage were married in August 2002 and filed for divorce in November 2002 after three months of marriage.
- Drew Barrymore and Tom Green wed in July 2001 and split five months later in December 2001.
- Britney Spears and Jason Allen Alexander were married for a total of 55 hours before their marriage was annulled in January 2004.
