Celebrity Wardrobe Malfunctions
From LoveToKnow Celebrity
Don’t you just hate it when you are wearing a perfectly good outfit and suddenly it malfunctions; imagine having a celebrity wardrobe malfunction. Stars’ clothes sometimes develop a mind of their own, too, and celebrity wardrobe malfunctions often happen at the most inopportune (or opportune, depending on your perspective) moments. Let’s take a look at some celebrities who have had a communication breakdown with their clothing right in front of hundreds of snapping cameras.
Janet Jackson
Perhaps you’ve heard of this one; the celebrity wardrobe malfunction heard round the world. During the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake took to the stage to perform a few numbers together. As Justin sang, he ripped off part of Janet’s costume, exposing her bare breast to the world, complete with some sort of sunshine breast jewelry adornment. Janet tried to use her hand to shield herself, but she wasn’t fast enough, and this moment of celebrity nudity was broadcast for millions to see.
In the days and weeks following the broadcast, as the rest of the world watched on, somewhat perplexed at the extent of anger generated in the US by a fraction of a second viewing of a female breast, American audience members clamored for someone’s head on a stick. CBS, the network which aired the Super Bowl, was fined 550,000. People clamored to know if this fiasco was staged or merely an accident. It was in answer to this question that Justin Timberlake uttered the words that would instantly become part of the American lexicon: “wardrobe malfunction.” Justin’s comments in the aftermath of the Super Bowl suggested that least he didn’t plan it, and so the public turned their ire on Janet.
Janet refused to speak of the incident for more than two years, until September, 2006, when she sat down with Oprah to discuss it for what she said would be “the first and the last time.” She emphatically stated that the wardrobe malfunction was not planned. She also said she felt a little let down at Justin’s response to the whole affair, and that while he has tried to contact her since, the two have not spoken.
Tara Reed
Tara Reed rose to fame in the American Pie movies, then became more famous for her wild, partying ways. Her celebrity wardrobe malfunction may be her most well-known role of all. In 2005, at P. Diddy’s 35th birthday party, Tara stood and posed for the waiting paparazzi, with her dress strap somewhere down near her elbow and one breast completely exposed. And she posed. And she posed. And she posed. She posed like that for close to 15 seconds, in fact, before some kind soul took mercy on her and pointed out her predicament. Topless photos of Tara circled the globe and certainly didn’t do much for her career. She recently had a breast reduction in hopes of being taken more seriously as an actress.
Lindsay Lohan
Apparently, parents had become more comfortable with celebrity wardrobe malfunctions between the 2004 Super Bowl and the 2006 Kids' Choice Awards. At the Kids' Choice Awards, Lindsay Lohan let it be know to children around the nation that she was indeed not wearing her knickers when she took to the stage. The potential international incident, however, never really caught any steam, and this malfunction slipped into the background.
Paris Hilton
A celebrity wardrobe malfunction in the world of Paris Hilton might not seem like such a big deal, what with the whole unfortunate video scandal, but still, it makes the news. When Paris was shooting her music video for her song Star are Blind, she had a malfunction of sorts. The top of her bathing suit slipped down, exposing her. Of course, she just kept right on lip syncing. That particular shot didn’t make it into the final video edit, but photos of the event did make the rounds.
