Celebrity Slips
From LoveToKnow Celebrity
Celebrity slips can come in all forms, from Janet Jackson's infamous wardrobe malfunction during the 2004 Super Bowl to Tara Reid's breast-baring escapade at P. Diddy's birthday bash. Besides doing something at the wrong time, celebrities are also notorious for saying the wrong things in front of photographers, fans and even the media. These celebrity slips take a look at how not thinking before you speak can garner you the wrong kind of publicity.
Unforgettable Celebrity Slips
Verbal celebrity slips are like bad weather. Once they happen, everyone will talk about them for a few days, and for the most part, they're forgotten -- until he or she says something stupid again. Here are a few unforgettable celebrity slips:
President George W. Bush
You have to love a president who speaks his mind and doesn't see anything wrong with what he is saying. Unlike his father, the former President George H. Bush, the younger George really needs to follow what his speech writers prepare for him or think before he talks. Some of the more memorable Bushisms include:
- "Too many good docs are getting out of business. Too many obgyn's aren't able to practice their love with women across this country."
- "One of the great things about books is sometimes there are some fantastic pictures."
- "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?"
- "The most important job is not to be governor, or first lady in my case."
- "I believe the results of focusing our attention and energy on teaching children to read and having an education system that's responsive to the child and to the parents, as opposed to mired in a system that refuses to change, will make America what we want it to be — a more literate country and a hopefuller country."
Jessica Simpson
Earlier in Jessica Simpson's singing and acting career, she and former hubby Nick Lachey did a little show on MTV called Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica -- a reality series showcasing the lovebirds' first year (and subsequently second and third years) of marriage. While Simpson was already hot on the music charts, it was her performance on television that still has some asking if she really is that dumb. Some of her more infamous slips include:
- "I think there's a difference between ditzy and dumb. Dumb is just not knowing. Ditzy is having the courage to ask!”
- “Is this chicken, what I have, or is this fish? I know it's tuna, but it says 'Chicken by the Sea.'”
- “At school my boobs were bigger than all my friends' and I was afraid to show them. Now, I feel they make my outfits look better. They're like an accessory.”
- “I'm such a blonde. It just doesn't make sense for me to have dark hair."
Linda Evangelista
Supermodel by profession, Linda Evangelista is also famous for being able to transform herself in front of a camera. During her hey-days in the 1980s and 1990s, she had at least 11 different haircuts and color changes. However, it was some of her celebrity slips that also put her in the spotlight:
- "It was God who made me so beautiful. If I weren't, then I'd be a teacher."
- "I won't get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day."
- "I can do anything as long as I don't have to speak."
- "Nobody dresses well anymore. It's all too casual and too little effort. Except for Singapore Airlines. I love that uniform."
Tom Cruise
Ah, yes. Who could forget Tom Cruise? Once the hottest male actor around, Cruise has slowly lost his popularity because of some of the words that have come out of his mouth. Who could forget when he jumped on Oprah's couch? Here are some of his not-so-smart quotes:
- "I will forever with this woman [Katie Holmes] be jumping on couches, dancing on tables and hanging from chandeliers."
- "Here is a woman - and I care about Brooke Shields because I think she is incredibly talented - (but) you look at where has her career gone?"
- "The thing that I'm saying about Brooke is that there's misinformation, okay. And she doesn't understand the history of psychiatry. She -- she doesn't understand in the same way that you don't understand it."
- "[Women] smell good. They look pretty. I love women. I do."
More Stupid Celebrity Quotes
In 2007, VH1 aired a show called, The Greatest: 40 Dumbest Celebrity Quotes Ever in which it ranked celebrity slips -- some foolish and others, well, just plain dim-witted. They included:
- "I make Jessica Simpson look like a rock scientist." (Tara Reid)
- "I think that the film Clueless was very deep. I think it was deep in the way that it was very light. I think lightness has to come from a very deep place if it's true lightness." (Alicia Silverstone)
- "What's Walmart, do they sell like wall stuff?" (Paris Hilton)
- "I think that gay marriage is something that should be between a man and a woman." (Arnold Schwarzenegger)
- "I get to go overseas places, like Canada." (Britney Spears)
- "Do I have a large frog in my hair? I have the sensation that something is eating my brain." (Joaquin Phoenix)
A Final Thought
Celebrity slips happen. They happen to musicians and politicians alike. Even the most profoundly spoken actor has a blunder every once in awhile. But so does your every day person. Unfortunately, celebrities have to realize that sometimes their words speak louder than their actions. And when that happens, there are usually cameras around to capture the moment.
