Celebrity Fashion Designers
From LoveToKnow Celebrity
They’ve got fame and fortune, but actors, singers and musicians are also earning extra money as celebrity fashion designers. From affordable to high-end clothing, celebrities have developed a number of fashion lines bearing their own famous name.
Sampling of Celebrity Fashion Designers
Sarah Jessica Parker
This Sex and the City actress has done the impossible – put her celebrity name on an affordable clothing line. Bitten, available at Steve & Barry’s stores, integrates Parker’s love of fashion, without the trendy price tag. Available in sizes 2 through 22, each piece costs less than $20 (the tag line is: "Fashion is not a luxury").
Jennifer Lopez
Not content to simply dance, sing and act, Jennifer Lopez also added fashion designer to her resume in 2001. Her JLO line reflects her unique sense of style and can be purchased at ShopJLo.com.
Jessica Simpson
Perhaps cashing in on her curvy figure, Jessica Simpson recently released a swimwear line bearing her name. While the line includes primarily bikinis, there are also several one-piece options. All of the suits have one thing in common – they are undeniably sexy.
Beyonce
Beyonce and her mother, Tina Knowles, developed the high-end fashion line House of Dereon in 2004. Beyonce and her sister, Solange, created the more affordable Dereon line, marketed to younger customers. The Dereon name is derived from her grandmother’s name, Agnez Dereon, a Southern seamstress and dressmaker. Fashions can be found at houseofdereon.com and dereon.com.
Olsen Twins
These mega rich stars added a fashion line to further increase their earnings -- the kids’ Mary-Kate and Ashley clothing line sold at Wal-Mart. The Olsen twins recently released their label The Row, a high fashion, pricey adult fashion line, as well as Elizabeth and James (named after their sister and brother), that offers more affordable styling. The Row is sold at Barney’s New York, while Elizabeth and James can be purchased at Niemen Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman in fall 2007.
Madonna
Madonna created a buzz when she released her M by Madonna line for clothing store H&M in spring 2007, an affordable collection of mix-and-match pieces primarily in white, black and gray. While the initial reaction had her merchandise flying off the shelves (and subsequently being sold on eBay), recent news says that the line fizzled.
Hilary Duff
From Disney Channel star to the big screen (plus a hot recording career), Hilary Duff should have been plenty content, but she jumped into the fashion game too. Her Stuff by Hilary Duff line is available in Target, Kohl’s, Wal-Mart, Sears, JCPenney and Limited Too, and mainly geared to pre-teen and teenage girls.
Gwen Stefani
One of the most stylish entertainers in the music industry, Gwen Stefani knows a thing or two about fashion. Lucky for the rest of the world, she’s willing to share her sense of style with a line she introduced in 2004, called L.A.M.B. (Love Angel Music Baby). The styles are oh-so-very-Gwen, featuring many of the looks that have defined her style. Her clothing line can be purchased at the Official L.A.M.B. site.
Kimora Lee Simmons
Formerly the wife of hip-hop music mogul Russell Simmons, model Kimora Lee Simmons created the Baby Phat line for kids and women, featuring a decidedly urban feel. Clothing can be purchased at the Baby Phat site.
More Celebrity Designers
While this is just a sampling of the celebrity designers that have made a name in fashion, there are certainly more, with many others continuing to jump on board, including:
- Penelope Cruz and her sister, Monica, are designing a clothing line for the Spanish label Mango.
- Victoria Beckham recently unveiled her denim collection, called dVb, available at Saks Fifth Avenue.
- Sienna Miller and her sister, Savannah, created the line twenty8twelve.
- British singer Lily Allen recently launched her Lily Loves line of shoes, dresses and accessories.
- Mandy Moore’s simple line of t-shirts and knit dresses, called Mblem, hit the racks in 2005 and can be found at boutique stores, Macy’s and Nordstrom.
Male Celebrity Designers
It’s not just the famous ladies who are designing trendy looks. Some well-known guys in the fashion business include:
- Sean “Diddy” Combs created the Sean John line in 1998.
- Justin Timberlake and his childhood friend launched the clothing line William Rast in 2005.
- Rapper Jay-Z developed Rocawear in 1999 for men, women and kids..

Tori, many people probably share the same sentiment as you regarding Kimora Lee Simmons, but there is no denying the huge success of her Baby Phat clothing empire (even if it was originally funded by ex-husband russell simmons) as far as JT goes, he's been designing simple clothing like jeans and shirts for a while. I don't think he's goin for the high-fashion designs. By the way he dresses, whether you love him or hate him, he always looks sharp.
