Keira Knightley has been criticized for her bony physique in the past, but she maintains that she just has a small, diminutive frame, telling British Elle magazine, “I am thin because that's what I am.” She recently won a lawsuit against Britain’s The Daily Mail over a picture of Knightley with a headline that implied that her skinny figure contributed to a teenager’s death from an eating disorder. Knightley matched the $6,000 she won from the suit with another $6,000 and donated it to an eating disorder charity.

Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie’s father, Lionel Richie, was concerned over the reality TV star's rapid weight loss, but told the press it was stress-related and not anorexia. She eventually sought treatment from a nutritionist and doctor to regain a more healthy weight, although she never admitted that she had an eating disorder.

Kate Bosworth

This young actress made headlines when she was featured on tabloids looking extremely thin. She denied rumors of an eating disorder and started to appear in photos looking more like her former, healthier self.

Angelina Jolie

While she has always had a thin frame, actress Angelina Jolie began to receive attention for her increasingly bony appearance in 2007. With a year that included the death of her mother and the continued estrangement from her dad, Jon Voight, Jolie blamed her weight loss on the stresses of her life.

Since her days on Ally McBeal, Calista Flockhart has been deflecting rumors of a possible eating disorder. In April 2006, she admitted that she had, in fact, suffered from an eating disorder during and after the legal comedy. She said, “At the time of all that, I was seriously stressed. I was working 15 hour days on the set and then I was dealing with the end of the show, which was basically my life. I started under-eating, over-exercising, pushing myself too hard and brutalizing my immune system. I guess I just didn't find time to eat.”

Mary-Kate Olsen

One-half of the Olsen twins, Mary-Kate Olsen’s waifish appearance led many to believe that she had an eating problem. Turns out that Mary-Kate did suffer from anorexia, but attended a treatment program in 2004 to begin her recovery.

Katharine McPhee

American Idol season five runner-up Katharine McPhee admitted that she suffered from bulimia for five years, beginning at age 17. She credits her audition on the talent competition as the catalyst to seek treatment and return to a healthier lifestyle, saying “That's why I say American Idol saved my life, because if I hadn't auditioned I don't think I would have gotten a handle on food."

Kelly Clarkson

American Idol alum Kelly Clarkson recently revealed that she also suffered from bulimia for a short time in high school. With constant criticism of her weight, she felt it was important to discuss her past weight-loss issues. Clarkson maintains a positive self-image, saying, "I've got a butt, I'm Greek -- I can't help that. And I think it's good for people to see normal."

Celebrity weight is a growing concern for the public, especially since young women often try to emulate their favorite star. Many believe that excessively skinny celebrities can send harmful messages to young women who attempt unhealthy methods for weight loss.

Many young stars are taking pride in their curvaceous figures to send a positive message to young women. These stars portray a healthy body image:

Achieving Celebrity Weight Loss Results

While you may want to look like your favorite celebrity, keep in mind that you should follow a plan of healthy eating and regular exercise, rather than relying on quick weight loss plans. Eating disorders are devastating to the body and can be life threatening.

Even with sensible eating and exercise, you still may not be the same size as your favorite starlet. Realize that they often have a team that includes a nutritionist, personal chef and personal trainer. They likely spend hours each day doing rigorous workouts.
