Celebrity Deathmatch

MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch

Celebrity Deathmatch debuted on MTV in May of 1998 and ran until October 2002, only to be revived in June of 2006 on MTV2. The show is a parody of the sport of professional wrestling, featuring celebrities pitted against each other in a violent battle which usually lasts to the death. These celebrities usually had some sort of fued or rivalry that was taken from real life, though sometimes out of context or exaggerated. The show is made using claymation, which is a form of stop-motion animation using moldable clay (think Wallace and Gromit). With very few exceptions, the celebrities portrayed in the show are voiced by imitators and not the actual celebrities themselves. The series was created by Eric Fogel, who has worked on various other projects for MTV.

Recurring Characters

Debbie Matenopoulos at Ladder 49 World Premiere
Debbie Matenopoulos at Ladder 49 World Premiere
  • Nick Diamond – Voiced by Len Maxwell, he’s the more obnoxious (and sometimes flat-out innappropriate) half of the Celebrity Deathmatch commentators. Nick is more or less the poster boy for unprofessionalism. He has an ongoing fued with Debbie Matenopoulos, the show’s interviewer, and he has also entered the ring more than a few times.
  • Johnny Gomez – Voiced by Maurice Schlafer, Johnny is the more competent and polite commentator. Through all of Nick’s screw-ups, he’s remained a faithful friend and co-worker and is just trying to make it to retirement without losing his mind.
  • Mills Lane – That’s right. The toughest judge on television. Voiced by himself, Mills Lane is the Celebrity Deathmatch referee. He starts matches with his trademark “Let’s get it on!” As a jab at the incompetent, weak referees that usually populate the sport of professional wrestling, Mills Lane has proven time and again that he will not be a pushover.
  • Stone Cold Steve Austin – The iconic World Wrestling Entertainment professional wrestler voices himself as a regular guest-commentator, as well as the show’s doctor, scientist, and weapons expert. As of this writing, he has not yet confirmed his return in 2006.
  • Debbie Matenopoulos – The former The View co-host lends her voice to her animated counterpart as the shows unprofessional interviewer. She has an ongoing fued with Nick Diamond, the commentator. She’s rarely prepared for her interviews.
  • Tally Wong – Voiced by herself, Tally Wong took over for Debbie Matenopoulos as the show’s interviewer when the show came back in 2006.
  • Marilyn Manson – The controversial rockstar is the undisputed champion of Celebrity Deathmatch. He was featured on the original Celebrity Deathmatch short where he fought and defeated Charles Manson. He has also defeated the Spice Girls, Hanson, Garth Brooks, and Ricky Martin. Although he did not provide his voice for all of these matches, he was onboard for most.

Celebrity Deathmatch Trivia

  • Celebrity Deathmatch was originally supposed to return in 2005 as part of MTV2’s new Sic’em Friday program block. Instead, it was pushed back to June 2006, and included as part of the sic’emation block with other animated programs.
  • A Celebrity Deathmatch movie was in the works, but it was cancelled in 2003.
  • A Celebrity Deathmatch video game was released in 2003 for PC, Sony Playstation 2, and the Microsoft Xbox, and was met with horrible reviews. The Nintendo Gamecube version was cancelled shortly thereafter.
