Ryan Rodney Reynolds was born on October 23, 1976, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He is the youngest of four boys. His father, James, is a retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer and his mother, Tammy, a retail clerk. At a very young age, Reynolds and his friends put together a comedy team to entertain each other, and they called themselves Yellow Snow.

Reynolds appeared in the Nickelodeon teen drama Hillside at the age of 15. He was part of the show from 1991 to 1993 and moved to Florida to be closer to the studio.

After graduating high school and eventually dropping out of college, Reynolds took on a variety of jobs including waiting tables and working at a grocery store. He also dabbled in performance at local comedy clubs, and ended up deciding to pursue a career as a professional actor.

Reynolds moved back to Vancouver and ended up with a number of supporting roles, mostly playing the son of a well-known actors. He teamed up with some big celebrities at this time, including Glenn Close and Kirsten Dunst, but still had trouble breaking through to bigger roles with more recognition.

The Move to Hollywood

Reynolds has had a few key film roles that have showcased his versatility and ability to take on a variety of characters. The biography of Ryan Reynolds as it relates to his rise to fame really gets underway when a friend, actor Chris Martin, convinced him to move to Los Angeles. After several months, he landed a starring role on the television sitcom Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place. The show lasted two seasons, but didn't bring in enough viewers to be renewed.

During this same period, Reynolds was active with the famous improv comedy troupe The Groundlings. He was forced to attend classes to appear with the troupe and even though he wasn't enthusiastic about these studies at the time, they were instrumental in helping him achieve his breakthrough role.

After appearing in the independent movie Finder's Fee, which was written and directed by Survivor host Jeff Probst, Reynolds landed the role of Van Wilder in National Lampoon's Van Wilder. Though the film itself was panned by critics, it became a cult hit with college students and launched Reynolds into a new level of stardom.

Ryan Reynolds dated Canadian singer Alanis Morissette for several years. The two were introduced by Drew Barrymore at a party, and hit it off immediately. Their engagement was announced in 2004, but by the beginning of 2007, the wedding and the relationship itself ended.

In 2007, Reynolds began dating actress Scarlett Johansson. The couple announced their engagement early in 2008, and were wed in September 2008.
