Actress Mackenzie Phillips Arrested

Best known for her role as Julie Horvath on the long running sitcom One Day at a Time, Mackenzie Phillips was arrested at the LAX airport.

Drug Issues of the Past

While taping for One Day at a Time, Mackenzie Phillips reportedly began showing up late, or not at all to rehearsals. Occasionally, Phillips would even fall asleep on the set. During the third year into the series, Mackenzie was arrested for drug possession. Everything seemed to be going well for Phillips until she started displaying the same types of behavior.

Producers of the show confronted the actress, asking her if her problems with substance abuse had resurfaced. Producers let it go for a bit, but then Phillips began showing up to rehearsal not even able to recite her lines coherently. At that time, they decided to give the troubled actress a six-week leave of absence from the show in order to attend rehab and get sober. The following year, Phillips was fired from the show, but later returned clean and sober one year later.

Current Drug Issues

Phillips had gotten her life turned around and was finding steady work on the show So Weird and had parts in hit shows such as E.R. and Cold Case, but her substance abuse problems of the past have resurfaced with her recent arrest at LAX.

The Incident

Phillips was attempting to board a flight at the busy airport when she went through a screening by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Members of the TSA found that the actress was attempting to board the flight with cocaine and heroin reportedly stuffed in balloons and baggies. The TSA personnel notified the airport police and Phillips was arrested. Phillips joins other 80's entertainers like Tawny Kitaen and Robert Downey Jr. (though he's made a comeback) who have been arrested for the same crime.
